Invite-a-Writer

Join the Invite-a-Writer registry

The ACT Writers Centre supports our members seeking to build careers out of their writing. We also believe it’s important for people to recognise writing skills as the invaluable assets they are, and utilise writers in the same way they would utilise any other specialised professional.

IAW Policy

Initially, IAW was run as a subscriber service, with the only pre-requisites for joining being that a person be a member of the ACT Writers Centre and able to pay the annual subscription fee. As of 2010 a new policy was developed that eliminated the subscription fee (although a $20 admin fee will occur when an account is first set up) and introduced an application process for members interested in being listed on the IAW register.

This policy ensures that members listed on IAW are guaranteed to meet a specific skill level, so clients can feel confident they are being are connected with the perfect person for the job.

Applications

To apply for the IAW register, see on the area you would like to apply for, below. If you have more than one area of expertise you are welcome to apply for multiple sections. However, within each application is a section which allows you to list additional writing skills, so even if you only apply for one area, your additional skills will still be taken into account.

Only current ACT Writers Centre members are eligible for the IAW register.

Freelance Writers

Freelance writers include ghostwriters, copywriters, journalists, writers of PR/media material, speechwriters and poets. The Writers Centre acknowledges that these are specific and valuable skills that deserve to be viewed as valid professions. However, please be aware that the transition from writing enthusiast/hobbyist to professional writer can be a long process, and the field is very competitive. As such, we cannot accept writers onto the professional register unless they have sufficiently demonstrated professional ability, either through current or previous employment (paid or volunteer).

Freelance Editors and Proofreaders

Although we have included editors and proofreaders in the same category, the terms editing and proofreading have distinctly different meanings. There are also several different levels of editing, ranging from a heavy structural edit to a light copy edit. For this reason, it is essential that you be clear with clients exactly what is expected before you begin a project.

Several education and training facilities offer editing qualifications, either on their own or as part of a larger qualification. Editors can also sit for IPEd accreditation. (For more information about the IPEd, visit www.iped-editors.org). Provided you have sufficient industry experience, neither educational or IPEd qualifications are essential for acceptance onto the IAW  freelance editors or proofreaders register, but they would give an editor a distinct advantage.

Speakers and Teachers

The Writers Centre is often approached by schools, govenment departments, businesses and organisation, and writing groups for access to teachers and speakers for creative writing workshops, professional development courses and talks. By employing the teacher/speaker through the Writers Centre, that person is automatically covered by the Writers Centre's public liability insurance. The Writers Centre can also provide a meeting space for the group or class to meet in, and assist with photocopying and other resource preparation.

Note: A separate system is in place for people wanting to host an ACT Writers Centre workshop. The ACT Writers Centre runs between 20 and 40 workshops each year. We are always happy to hear from people interested in running a workshop, provided they have relevant experience in the area they are teaching, and have the necessary teaching skills. If you would like to run a workshop for the Writers Centre, please email director@actwriters.org.au
