The Centre is... located in the Doonkuna Wing, Gorman House Arts Centre, Ainslie Avenue, Braddon, ACT 2612. The Centre is a non-profit organisation, promoting writing-based culture and supporting the professional rights and interests of writers in the ACT and region. The opening hours are: Monday - Friday: 10am-1pm & 2pm-5pm Saturday 10am to 4pm.. The ACT Writers Centre became an incorporated association on 21 December 1994. A Steering Committee of ACT Writers, representing several organisations, worked toward establishing the Centre. Since its inception the Centre has run a wide variety of programs including programs for writers with disabilities and for writers from non-English speaking backgrounds and Indigenous backgrounds. Regional workshops as far away as Bega, Yass, Goulburn, Booroowa, Batemans Bay and Cooma have been held. Regular workshops for young writers, beginners and advanced are also been run. We have also published two anthologies and collaborated on a third with the Trades and Labour Council. Our mission Supporting writers and promoting writing in the ACT region. Provide employment and promotion services to ACT Writers Centre members Goal 4. Provide a broad range of high quality support services for members Goal 5. Ensure high quality administration and sustainability of the ACT Writers Centre What the Centre does The ACT Writers Centre offers writing workshops, seminars, an informative newsletter, access to computers and printers, the Marian Eldridge Resource Library, free meeting space for member organisations, advice and referral. We also hold occasional projects like master-classes, mentorships, author talks, fundraising activities, collaboration with other literary organisations and assorted other activities. We also refer writers and editors for employment. Our members Currently we have over 900 members - made up of editors, authors, poets, children's writers, journalists, English teachers, academics, literary groups such as the ACT Playwrights, Canberra Speculative Fiction Guild, Closet Poets, etc. Some of our more well known writers are the novelist Marion Halligan and the poet Geoff Page. We often employ well known visiting writers such as Les Murray, Rodney Hall, Jackie French, Philip Salom, Libby Hathorn, Hazel Edwards, Peter Bakowski, Linda Jaivin, Nick Earls, Venero Armanno and Elizabeth Jolley. Services for members The ACT Writers Centre has a Meeting Room available free for use by members and a computer, printer, fax and photocopier available for use by members. We have a growing library of books about writing and by writers. We also sell books by members on consignment. Our noticeboards are full of information about publishing, competitions, writers' rights, and writing courses. Drop in during office hours to see how we can help you! Our newsletter Our newsletter is published 11 times per year and is a minimum of 20 pages each issue. It contains information on markets, publishing opportunities, profiles of local authors, competitions and upcoming events. The deadline for newsletter contributions is always the 15th of the month. Copyright remains with the contributors. Articles and advertising can be accepted by e-mail, or on IBM disc. The editor, while endeavouring to keep to original copy, reserves the right to edit the material to meet the policy, space requirements and printing schedule of ACTWrite. Advertising Rates
ACTWrite is sent to over 940 members, 45 schools, local and regional libraries and around 100 other organisations locally and interstate.
